Phoenicia Branch to Feature Poet and Artist 'Sparrow'

Posted July 2, 2021

(Phoenicia, NY)  Ulster Savings Bank would like to invite the public to their 58 Main Street, Phoenicia branch to enjoy their latest art exhibit by poet and artist Sparrow (Michael Gorelick). His exhibit of drawings, collages, and doodles will be on display at the branch for the month of July.

Sparrow was born in Manhattan in 1953. In 1973, he flunked out of Cornell University and began a series of low-paying jobs, most of them part-time. (His annual salary has never exceeded $10,782.) For 18 years, he worked with developmentally disabled adults and autistic children at the 92nd St. Y. Along with his wife Violet Snow and daughter Sylvia, Sparrow moved to Phoenicia in 1999. Sparrow has been there ever since, except for two mystifying years in Teaneck, New Jersey. Sparrow has been published in the New York Times, the New Yorker, the American Poetry Review, Monster Trucks, Lungfull!, Reptiles of the Mind, and the Sun. He has published 10 books of poetry, essays, and fiction. (One of his most recent is Small Happiness & Other Epiphanies (Monkfish)).

For more information concerning the exhibit, please contact Samantha Awand-Gortel, Phoenicia Branch Manager, at 845-688-5965, ext. 6701.
